It may have been a #2 versus #7 match-up, but the 7th ranked Mitchell Mohawks gave everyting the favoured Springfield Xtreme could handle before the Xtreme eventually prevailed 3-2 in the opening game of their Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League quarter-final seriesThursday night at Mitchell.

Mitchell led 2-1 after the first as Colten Unger netted a pair for the hometown Mohawks while Austen Frame responded for the Xtreme.

It remained 2-1 through the second until Trevor Weimer, named the league’s Top Defenceman this year, tied it for Springfield just 43 seconds into the third, and then Riley Welsh scored the winner midway through the third. Both those goals were set up Jesse Mitchell.

Both goaltenders were outstanding in the game as Luke Friesen made 43 saves in a losing cause for the Mohawks while Quinn Walterson stopped 32 for the winning Xtreme.

Game two in the best of five series will be Saturday at 8:00 p.m. at Oakbank.

Meanwhile, the other two quarter-final series got underway on Wednesday, as both openers were settled 5-4 in overtime. Chris Toupin scored the winner for Grunthal over Steinbach, with game two of that series tonight at 8:00 p.m. in Steinbach.  And Curtis Metzler was the hero for the St. Adolphe Hawks as the Hawks beat the Lorette Comets. Game two in that series is Saturday at 8:00 p.m. at St. Adolphe.
