The Springfield Xtreme defeated the Red River Mudbugs 3-1 Wednesday night at Oakbank to take a 3-1 lead in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League championship series.

Riley Thomsen opened the scoring for the Xtreme just one minute after the opening face-off. The score remained 1-0 until Springfield added a second goal as Riley Welsh scored just a minute into the third period.

Bryce Mazinke narrowed the Springfield lead to 2-1 as he scored with seven minutes remaining in the third.  Steven Maschleko added an empty netter for the Xtreme.

Quinn Walterson stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced to pick up the win in the Springfield net.

Game five in the best of seven series will be played Friday at 8:00 p.m. at St. Jean and game six, if necessary back in Oakbank Sunday at 7:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, at Ste Anne last night, the Red River Wild defeated the Ste Anne Aces 3-2 to take 2-1 lead in the Carillon Senior Hockey League finals.

Paul Remillard and Clint Lucier staked the Wild to a 2-0 lead in the first and Derek Mohr added a third Red River goal in the second just two minutes after Miguel Rondeau had cut the Red River lead to 2-1. Pat Normandeau also scored for Ste Anne midway through the third but the Wild hung on in the 3-2 final.

Game four in the series goes tonight at 8:00 p.m. at St. Jean and then back to Ste Anne for game five Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
