With their backs against the wall, the Springfield Xtreme doubled the Mitchell Mohawks 4-2 Thursday night in Mitchell to force a fifth and deciding game in their Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League quarter-final series.

After the sixth place Mohawks had stunned the third place Xtreme by winning the first two games of the series, the Xtreme have now bounced back to win the next two.

Mitchell opened the scoring in last night’s game on a Colton Unger marker five minutes into the first but the Xtreme took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission as Jeff Boonstra and Tyler Chapko scored just 18 seconds apart late in the frame.

Unger, with this second of the game, tied it for the Mohawks midway through the second but Nate Renooy scored what proved to be the winning goal for the Xtreme two minutes later. Parker Perchuk added an insurance marker in the third.

The deciding game in the series will be played Saturday at 8:00 p.m. at Oakbank.

Meanwhile, game four of the Steinbach vs. St. Adolphe series will also be played Saturday at 8:00 p.m. at St. Adolphe. Steinbach leads that series 2-1. If a deciding game is required, it will be played Sunday at 7:00 p.m. in Steinbach.

One series is now complete as the Lorette Comets downed the Grunthal Red Wings 8-5 on Wednesday to complete the three-game sweep.

The pennant-winning Red River River Mudbugs received a first round bye in the playoffs.
