And this is why they call it the second season. Last year, the Red River Wild, who finished sixth in the regular season standings with a 7-10-1 record, rolled through all comers in the post-season to claim their second straight Carillon Senior Hockey League championship.
We’re seeing a little of the same this year as the fourth place Grunthal Red Wings (10-10) have a two games to none lead on the pennant-winning Springfield 98s (17-3) in the CSHL’s best of seven semi-finals.
After taking the series opener 4-3 Friday night at Grunthal, the Red Wings doubled the 98s 4-2 Saturday night at Oakbank to take a 2-0 lead in the series. Matt Krahn made 33 saves in net to backstop the Red Wings to victory. Jeff Penner did most of the damage offensively for the winners as he scored twice and set up goals by Matthew Bayduza and Dave Barkman. Ken Selby and Dave Frykas replied for the 98s.
Game three in the series will be played Monday at 8:00 p.m. at Grunthal. Meanwhile, the other semi-final series between the Steinbach Huskies and Red River Wild continues with game four tonight at 7:00 p.m. at St. Jean. After losing the first two games of the series by one-goal margins, the Huskies got back into it with a convincing 7-2 victory over the Wild Friday at Steinbach.
