The thriving Eastman Wildcats girls’ softball program, which is fielding four regional teams this season, had just gotten their season underway earlier this spring with a couple of games under their belts, before COVID-19 pulled the rug from under them, again.
Now the season is resuming, with all teams in action this week in a re-jigged schedule that will see four teams in action in the first week of this summer schedule. The four age-group teams (U12, U14, U16 and U19) compete in the Manitoba Premier Softball League, which includes ladies teams from across the province.
The four Wildcats teams will again be playing all their home games at Friedensfeld.
The U12 Wildcats, who returned to the field last night (Wednesday) at John Blumberg vs. the Manitoba Lightning, are back in action tonight (Thursday) at 6:30 p.m. at Lincoln Field in Winnipeg vs. the Manitoba Angels. They will return home to host the Interlake Phillies in a doubleheader Sunday at Friedensfeld, with games going at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
In U14, the Eastman Wildcats will be extremely this weekend with four games in a pair of doubleheaders on their home diamonds in Friedensfeld this weekend. On Saturday the Wildcats will host the Westman Magic, with games at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m., and then Sunday the Smitty’s Terminators will face-off against the Wildcats at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.
U16 Wildcats opened their season yesterday at John Blumberg with a doubleheader against the Westman Magic. Their next action will be July 14 at Blumberg in a doubleheader vs. the Winnipeg Lightning at 7:00 and 9:00 p.m.
And in U19, the Wildcats will host the Westman Magic this Sunday at Friedensfeld in a doubleheader and start times of 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
Teams will be playing anywhere from 16 to 24 games through the balance of the summer, depending on the age group. The schedule will be considered exhibition in nature as their likely will not be playoffs this year.
Meanwhile, the Southeast Girls Softball League, which is ‘A’ community ball, will have a different look this season. Normally the bulk of the games are played in May and June followed by provincials in July. But because the season is just starting now, league president Pat Tetrault says that many of the teams in the various communities have opted not to field teams.
Instead, Tetrault says the league will be forming two teams each from the U12, U14 and U16 age groups that will be competing in a league in Winnipeg. Those teams will be hosting home games at Landmark and Steinbach.
