About Tyler Blashko

When were you born?

Between 1981 and 1996 (Millennial)

Tell our readers a bit about your professional life. What do you do for a living? If you're an incumbent candidate, what did you do before you entered politics?

I’m an educator with the Seven Oaks School Division, working at Wayfinders, to support high school students as they graduate and transition to adulthood. As an administrator and mentor, I’ve seen first-hand what can happen to youth when our support systems are stretched thin - and I’m running to do my part in building a Manitoba where our children and youth can thrive.

I hold a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Manitoba, as well as Bachelor’s Degrees in Business Administration and Urban & Inner-City Studies from the University of Winnipeg.

What's the highest level of education you've attained?

Master's degree

How long have you lived in the constituency? If you don't currently live there, what led you to run there instead of where you live?

I grew up in Lagimodière and currently live here with my husband.

What is the biggest challenge facing your constituency, and how would you address it?

Like so many in our province, we here in Lagimodière want to see health care fixed. As a grandson, I’ve seen how cuts to home care and health care have affected my grandmother and my family. I know I’m not alone in wanting the ones I love to have the care and dignity they deserve. That starts with stopping the cuts and investing in our health care system by ensuring healthcare workers are appreciated and valued for their work.

If elected, what will be your first priority?

On the doorstep, people are telling me they want an MLA who will listen to their concerns, be responsive, available and will fight for their priorities. If I’m elected, those priorities begin with fixing health care and making sure families have access to affordable, quality child care and recreation opportunities.

Who are your role models in politics, and why?

The politicians who inspire me are the ones who lead with care and compassion, like Jack Layton. He knew that we in public life work for the people in our communities. I grew up here, I live here, and I’ll be here for my neighbours in Lagimodière.

Tell us something about yourself that voters might find surprising.

My Métis roots in this neighbourhood go back generations: my grandmother has fond memories of growing up along what is now St. Anne’s Road. Lavallee School is named for my great-grandfather Louis Lavallee, who fought in the North-West Resistance in 1885 and was one of the people that brought back Louis Riel’s body from Regina.
