The Virden Oil Capitals have locked up their head coach and general manager.

Tyson Ramsey, who has been with the Manitoba Junior Hockey League franchise for the past seven years, signed a four-year extension with Virden.

“Virden has become home for my family and me, and I am very proud of what we’ve built here together to this point,”

Ramsey said in a story posted to the Oil Capitals website.

“I am so appreciative of the support our hockey club receives from season ticket holders, business partners and fans and there is no other place I would rather be. This organization is extremely committed to putting together a competitive team every season and at the same time developing players on and off the ice, and within the community.”

Ramsey has led Virden to five playoff appearances in his seven years with the franchise, picking up coach of the year honours in 2023, when the Oil Caps made it all the way to the league finals, falling to Steinbach.

“Tyson’s impact on our program goes far beyond wins and losses,” team governor Bob Berry said.

“He has built a culture of accountability, development, and professionalism that aligns perfectly with what we want the Virden Oil Capitals to represent in the MJHL. We are thrilled that Tyson, his wife Tracy, and their two daughters have chosen to remain part of our community for another four years.”

The Oil Capitals currently lead the MJHL’s West Division.

SPILLER REACHES NEW HEIGHTS

Blake Spiller, the MJHL’s leader in all-time wins by a coach, extended his legacy last week, becoming the first head coach to reach 750 wins.

The win came in spectacular fashion, as the Portage Terriers held off a late comeback from the Winkler Flyers to win 6-5 and keep their advantage in the MJHL East Division standings race.

Spiller passed Doug Stokes to become the league-leader in 2024.
