About Madelaine Dwyer
When were you born?
Between 1981 and 1996 (Millennial)
Tell our readers a bit about your professional life. What do you do for a living? If you're an incumbent candidate, what did you do before you entered politics?
For 16 years I was a municipal worker at the City of Winnipeg. For the first 5 years I worked at the 311 Contact Centre. After returning from maternity leave, I began working at Water Services where I ended my career in Underground Construction repairing water infrastructure like watermains, service lines and hydrants.
I left the City this year and started a lawn care/snow removal business with my husband and also do Taskrabbit and dog sitting/dog daycare.
What's the highest level of education you've attained?
Some university education
How long have you lived in the constituency? If you don't currently live there, what led you to run there instead of where you live?
I was born and raised in Charleswood until I had my first child at 18 and then moved to the North End for 10 years. I moved to Westwood in 2020.
I chose to run in Charleswood as I lived there for 17 years and would have loved to continue living there. My children still continue to play organized sports in Charleswood leagues and I still spend lots of time in the neighbourhood for work or play.
When I ran federally for the NDP the federal boundaries included Charleswood and Headingley and I was able to speak with many constituents and hear what their concerns and priorities were.
What is the biggest challenge facing your constituency, and how would you address it?
When I'm at the doorstep I am hearing that people are concerned about health care and education. I would look to invest funds into both the Healthcare and education systems. I want to ensure staff have the resources they need to do their job, make sure there are enough staff in each sector to stop burnout, excessive overtime and to retain staff.
I want to be part of a government that respects staff and is there to listen to them. I want to cut wait-times for surgeries and specialist appointments, have EAs and ESLs in classrooms and schools and functioning systems that help Manitobans.
If elected, what will be your first priority?
If elected, my first priority would be to know my role and Roblin inside and out. I would like to be in the community, helping out at events and programs and being a voice for Roblin.
Who are your role models in politics, and why?
My role model in politics is Jack Layton. He was a leader who sparked an interest in politics for me when I was young and had not yet learned that my voice can be one that affects change.
Tell us something about yourself that voters might find surprising.
Something surprising about me is that I was born at 2 pounds 4 ounces, 3 months early. Since I've been born I've been working hard and don't think that will ever change.
