About Mike Moyes

When were you born?

Between 1966 and 1980 (Generation X)

Tell our readers a bit about your professional life. What do you do for a living? If you're an incumbent candidate, what did you do before you entered politics?

I have been a teacher for twenty years. For the last seven years, I have been at Glenlawn Collegiate teaching History and English.

What's the highest level of education you've attained?

Master's degree

How long have you lived in the constituency? If you don't currently live there, what led you to run there instead of where you live?

My wife and I have lived in the Riel constituency for sixteen years. We moved into the neighbourhood when we started our family.

What is the biggest challenge facing your constituency, and how would you address it?

The biggest challenge facing constituents in Riel is health care. It has been the number one issue raised on the doorstep and so many families have been impacted by long wait times.

The Manitoba NDP team would address the issues in health care through a comprehensive program that has been developed in collaboration with front-line health care professionals. The first step includes focusing on staffing through increased retention of nurses, doctors, and other health care workers through supports and working to decrease mandated overtime.

Additionally, we will bolster our numbers through increased recruitment, reducing barriers for health care workers from other jurisdictions, and working with the University of Manitoba in training more front-line health care workers.

We will also open a new Emergency Room at the Victoria Hospital. Furthermore, we will be opening neighbourhood clinics that will allow families to access health care quickly without having to go to an ER or Urgent Care.

If elected, what will be your first priority?

If I have the honour of being elected, I will start working with our NDP team and front-line workers to fix the health care staffing crisis.

Who are your role models in politics, and why?

My role model in politics is Gary Doer. He took a balanced approach to government and demonstrated how collaborating with all people can accomplish great things- better health care, improved social supports, and a balanced budget.

Tell us something about yourself that voters might find surprising.

One thing that voters might be surprised to know about myself is that I was able to get my black belt, along with my son, in Taekwondo through the Greendell Park Community Centre.
