About Mintu Sandhu

When were you born?

Between 1946 and 1965 (Baby Boomer)

Tell our readers a bit about your professional life. What do you do for a living? If you're an incumbent candidate, what did you do before you entered politics?

Before being elected in 2019, I was worked for Unicity Taxi and worked my way up to company manager. I know every pocket and corner of this city.

What's the highest level of education you've attained?

No certificate, diploma or degree

How long have you lived in the constituency? If you don't currently live there, what led you to run there instead of where you live?

I've lived in The Maples for 34 years.

What is the biggest challenge facing your constituency, and how would you address it?

When I'm on the doorsteps of my riding I constantly hear about the Pallister-Stefanson PC government’s closure of the emergency room at Seven Oaks Hospital and it’s well-respected heart-attack centre. People are saying it's time for change and a new government needs to do what it takes to recruit the doctors and nurses our health care system needs. That’s a commitment Wab Kinew and our NDP team have made!

If elected, what will be your first priority?

Clearly repairing our healthcare system is vital to all Manitobans. Here in The Maples, we need to stay healthy with more green space and sports fields for basketball, badminton, soccer, and other outdoor activities. We need water splash pads for the kids to enjoy our summers.

Who are your role models in politics, and why?

I was always impressed by Jack Layton and was deeply moved by his last letter: “My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.” I have great optimism in Manitoba and Manitobans.

Tell us something about yourself that voters might find surprising.

I’m a big dog lover, especially Rezo, our border collie.
