About Rachelle Schott

When were you born?

Between 1981 and 1996 (Millennial)

Tell our readers a bit about your professional life. What do you do for a living? If you're an incumbent candidate, what did you do before you entered politics?

For the last number of years, I’ve worked in the public education system. I’ve seen firsthand how PC cuts have impacted our children’s ability to learn and thrive. I also worked at the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba which was a partnership between the federal government and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.

What's the highest level of education you've attained?

Bachelor's degree

How long have you lived in the constituency? If you don't currently live there, what led you to run there instead of where you live?

I grew up in North Kildonan and my husband and I raise our children here in Fraser's Grove in Northeast Winnipeg. I was asked to run in Kildonan-River East because of my deep roots in the community having attended all three levels of school in River East Transcona School Division. I have also committed myself to extensive volunteerism with seniors, families and children here in Kildonan-River East.

What is the biggest challenge facing your constituency, and how would you address it?

The Pallister-Stefanson cuts to healthcare and community programs have affected everyone but there’s really a lack of support for seniors in our community. Our aging population deserves to retire with dignity and the ability to stay in their home with supports for as long as possible. The NDP will address this by establishing an independent Seniors’ Advocate, increasing homecare hours and ensuring more hours of care in Personal Care Homes.

If elected, what will be your first priority?

My priority would be increasing accessibility for Kildonan-River East community members to their MLA’s office. I want to be able to communicate with constituents about the positive changes we will make to healthcare and seniors care. Local representation must be open and accountable.

Elected officials are first and foremost public servants. I grew up in the community, my husband and I raise our children here. It would be an honour to serve you and your family.

Who are your role models in politics, and why?

I admire my uncle, former Premier Gary Doer, former MLA Harry Schellenberg and former Deputy Premier Dr. Jean Freisen. I’m inspired by Gary’s ability to bring people together, Harry’s dedication to his community and Jean’s leadership as Manitoba’s first female Deputy Premier.

Tell us something about yourself that voters might find surprising.

During my time as school president at Miles Macdonell Collegiate, I was tasked with welcoming exchange students to our school. I have remained friends with one of the students I met during this experience. A few years ago, I travelled to Brazil to reconnect with her and meet her family. We are still in touch and my family is planning a trip so our children can meet!
