About Rejeanne Caron
When were you born?
Between 1966 and 1980 (Generation X)
Tell our readers a bit about your professional life. What do you do for a living? If you're an incumbent candidate, what did you do before you entered politics?
I am 30 year a police officer with the Winnipeg Police Service. I am currently serving on the front lines responding to 911 calls for service. I currently work out of West District Station that includes the area of Fort Rouge.
What's the highest level of education you've attained?
College, CEGEP or other non-university certificate or diploma
How long have you lived in the constituency? If you don't currently live there, what led you to run there instead of where you live?
What led me to run in the Constituency of Fort Rouge is that I currently serve the area as a police officer. I have a unique perspective of the community as I respond to 911 calls for service and protect the citizens of Fort Rouge.
What is the biggest challenge facing your constituency, and how would you address it?
Affordability, crime and addictions are some of the biggest challenges the constituency faces.
The PC party has announced the following on affordability:
Carbon tax relief fund - We bridged the gap on the unfair and expensive Liberal-NDP Carbon tax this winter by providing direct relief to Manitobans. We’ll keep fighting this unfair tax that increases the price of everything, groceries, gasoline and even hydro bills.
● Our PC team provided concrete action on tax relief in budget 2023, providing real results of savings for Manitobans. Progressive conservatives are saving the average Manitoban family $5500 per year with 8 major tax breaks, rebates and benefits.
● School Tax Rebate - Our PC team is the only party committed to keeping the school tax rebate in Manitoba, saving the average Manitoba family more than $700 in 2023. The NDP has made it clear they want to get rid of this rebate and take that money out of your pockets.
● The only way the NDP can pay for their big promises and bad spending habits is by raising the 10% PST. It shouldn't come as a surprise, that Wab’s mentor Greg Selinger lied about raising the PST when he was in office.
● Childcare - Our PC team was one of the first provinces in Canada to put in a maximum of $10 per day child care, and we funded, committed to or built more than 12000 daycare spaces across the province
In terms of addictions, the PC Party is
DOUBLING TREATMENT SPACES
● This commitment will double publicly funded treatment spaces
● We want people back with their family and loved ones
● Supporting our most vulnerable
FIGHTING FOR RECOVERY
● Our PC Team has already funded more than 1600 treatment spaces
● Opened 7 Rapid Access to Addictions Medicine Clinic
● Put forward the Mental Health and Addictions Roadmap
NDP HAVE DONE NOTHING
● Did nothing while in office for 17 years
● Voted against every addiction measure
● BC NDP hand out state-sponsored hard drugs
In terms of crime, the PC party will not defund the police, unlike the NDP.
Our party will fight hard on behalf of Manitobans against the NDP/Liberal coalition in Ottawa who have changed the law allowing for the release of violent and repeat offenders into our communities. Contrary to what the NDP claim, this rest solely on the federal government to change. The PC party is the only party fighting for Manitobans safety.
If elected, what will be your first priority?
One if the priorities is affordably. Many are struggling and are having difficulty putting food on the table. Sadly, the Policies of the federal NDP Liberal coalition has impacted the country causing the cost of living to soar.
However, the PC party has a plan to for economic development and we plan to fill 100,000 jobs. Targeted investments in skills training, recruitment to tackle labour gaps in key economic sectors.
A PC Party will invest in $ 16 million initial investment targeted to support the most in-demand industries.
Who are your role models in politics, and why?
My role model in politics is the Honourable Candice Bergen, Member of Parliament and former Interim Leader of the Conservative Party Canada. Ms. Bergen broke through the glass ceiling of politics all the while juggling being a mother and wife. Ms Bergen through her leadership ability reunited the party and turned over the reins to the Honourable soon-to-be Prime Minister, Pierre Poilievre.
Tell us something about yourself that voters might find surprising.
I am a Red River Metis woman, mother and wife. I am a francophone.
I am a 30-year police officer also trained as a sex crimes investigator and Intelligence Analyst.
During my duties as a police officer, I worked with many people from all walks of life, organizations, not-for-profit organizations, shelters, businesses, and governments. I have an in-depth understanding and invaluable experience with complicated social issues such as criminal behaviour, violence, addiction, poverty, homelessness, mental health, and family violence.
I am an huge advocate for the safety of women and girls. I was involved in the Winnipeg Safe Cities Initiative, a partnership with the UN Women Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces Global Initiative to reduce sexual violence against women and girls in public spaces.
Also, I proudly participated on a steering committee of 34 community and government leaders to develop a research/strategy called “Connecting the Circle” to end gender-based homelessness in Winnipeg. A first of its kind in Canada. The report identified the gaps that diverse women, trans, Two-Spirit, and gender non-conforming people fall through that lead to homelessness.
Fun fact: I am a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
