About Sarah Pinsent-Bardarson

When were you born?

Between 1981 and 1996 (Millennial)

Tell our readers a bit about your professional life. What do you do for a living? If you're an incumbent candidate, what did you do before you entered politics?

I am a registered social worker with a Masters Degree and have a 25-year career in health and social services. Five years ago, I opened a private counselling practice in Gimli. I meet with individuals, couples and families seeking support during a difficult time or situation.

What's the highest level of education you've attained?

Master's degree

How long have you lived in the constituency? If you don't currently live there, what led you to run there instead of where you live?

14 years

What is the biggest challenge facing your constituency, and how would you address it?

I have connected with thousands of voters throughout Interlake-Gimli. People tell me their stories and fears about the lack of rural healthcare, all due to the Pallister-Stefanson cuts. I will work alongside our Manitoba NDP team and local communities to recruit and retain the healthcare staff needed to staff our small centres and maintain consistent, available community and hospital care.

If elected, what will be your first priority?

My first priority will be to put into action the healthcare reforms people have been talking to me about since I decided to run. I will learn in greater detail what is happening across Interlake-Gimli and become acquainted to all the active issues, initiatives and projects in my constituency.

Who are your role models in politics, and why?

I really admired Jack Layton. Jack led with grace, humility and unity. Jack reminded Canadians of the power of togetherness.

Tell us something about yourself that voters might find surprising.

For many years I was certified as a Fitness Instructor in Manitoba. I taught a range of classes in Dauphin, Gimli and Winnipeg Beach. When my daughter was a newborn, I instructed Baby & Me Aqua Fitness. Since then, I have taught classes ranging from aqua fitness to step aerobics to hi-lo impact aerobics classes. High intensity interval training and weight lifting are my favourite workouts!
