Bang for your buck at Buffalo Point layout

Since the golf course at Buffalo Point First Nation (Lake of the Sandhills Golf Course) in the southeast corner of the province first opened nearly 20 years ago, built on the shores of Lake of the Woods, it has largely flown under the radar.

It has flown under the radar mostly because it is located in a less populated area and it is more of a destination course. But for those who have played the scenic and challenging layout many have raved about the experience, and the course.

In mid-January, management of the golf club was caught off guard when they garnered national attention by being named the third best value golf course in Canada as listed in Golf Advisor, which listed the top 25 courses in Canada for best value.

For their Canada Golfer’s Choice list, they looked at online reviews of the course from golfers during the 2019 season. Courses needed a minimum of 10 reviews to be considered. A total of 700 golf courses from across the country were reviewed.

Coming in number one in the country was Harbor Club & Resort at Elbow, SK, followed by Castlegar Golf Club in B.C. Two other Manitoba golf clubs also made the national top 25 list as Neepawa Golf & Country Club came in at #9 and Teulon Golf & Country Club was #15.

When hearing about the award, golf course superintendent Drew Thunder said, “Lake of the Sandhills was designed to capture every type of golfer. Laying along the south shores of Lake of the Woods and carved into the woods of Buffalo Point, is worth enough to come play for the view.”

Landon Kroeker, Buffalo Point marketing manager, added “We’re extremely proud of being recognized from Golf Advisor as the #3 ranked best value golf course in all of Canada. Drew and his team work tirelessly to keep our course in top condition for every style of player. We are incredibly grateful to be seen as a new hotspot on the Manitoba golf scene.”

The reviews were all verified by Golf Advisor. One reviewer said, “The course grass itself was in excellent condition. Incredibly scenic. I’ve paid more at other courses for far less value.”

Another said, “Every time I play this course it is in great condition. It’s challenging but yet open enough that the average golfer can enjoy the round. This is my place to go when I have a free day to go for a round.”

Lake of the Sandhills Golf Course is 6,829 yards in length and plays to a par 72.
