For retired couple John and Kiran Mahi, they spent the winter lockdown going for as many walks in the outdoors as they could. But their preferred form of exercise is swimming at the Steinbach Aquatic Centre.

The Mahi’s finally got back into the pool on Monday, the first day it re-opened to the public after being shut down for the past year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

After emerging from the aquatic centre late Monday morning, after attending the first aquacise class since the pool’s re-opening, one can only assume they had a broad smile underneath those masks following the aquatic workout that they have missed so much in recent months.

The last time they were in the pool was on Sept. 30, and that was at the outdoor pool as the indoor pool was closed for renovations at that time. “The water was fine, little cool outside, had to wear a toque with the wind,” said John.

For the previous three weeks, when some of the earlier restrictions had been lifted, the aquatic centre was allowed conduct some swimming lessons, but only on a one-to-one basis.

Although the pool is now open, it is at a very limited capacity of only 25% of normal capacity. Currently the pool is only open for public swim, lap swim, aquacise classes and private swimming lessons. Currently they are not taking registrations for swimming lessons.

The public and lap swim tickets must be purchased online, two to three days in advance. Public swims are in two-hour blocks and lap swims are in one-hour blocks. When booking tickets keep in mind that families must be from the same household.

The hot tub and sauna remained closed at this time.

A complete pool schedule and booking information is available on the City of Steinbach website.

A nearly $1.5 million dollar renovation to the 20-year-old facility, which started in June and was completed in November, but the pool was not allowed to open to due to COVID-19 restrictions.
