Eric Adams is once again suiting up for the University of Manitoba (U of M) Bisons at training camp, and the home-grown Steinbach receiver says he has big expectations for himself both on and off the field this upcoming season.

Adams, who lives in Steinbach, played for the SRSS Sabres football team for three seasons before first being invited to Bisons training camp before the start of the 2018 football season.

“I got invited to their spring camp in 2018 which is held in April, and then after that I was contacted by their coach and they offered me a spot on their roster,” Adams said while speaking over the phone earlier this week following a training camp workout at IG Field.

“Being a guy from outside the city, to get that call was very exciting.”

During his rookie year the receiver said he only got into game action for one preseason game, but added the talent at receiver last season made the starting lineup tough to crack.

“Our receiver core was really strong last year and now a few of them have moved on to the CFL,” Adams said. “But it was a great experience because I learned a lot from the older guys, and it was just a great experience being around those guys and taking it all in.”

Adams is now currently taking part in Bisons training camp for the upcoming 2019 season, and he said he has high hopes for more playing time this season.

“There is more opportunity as we have lost some receivers,” he said. “My personal goal is to make the travel roster this year, and make that as either a receiver or on special teams.

“I just have to work hard and perform my role as best as I can, and hopefully everything works out.”

Adams said he spent much of his summer training for the upcoming season and for training camp, and is now excited to get out on the field and begin practising for real.

“I’ve been doing a lot of training but there is still a big adjustment going into practice rather than the training you do in the summer, so right now it’s all about getting into that rhythm with training camp,” he said.

“I’ve been working to just get back into it after the summer. It’s going really good so far.”

Along with on field goals for the upcoming season, Adams, who is majoring in Kinesiology, said he also has some big academic goals for the upcoming school year including a goal of being named an Academic All Canadian by being on the Bisons team while also achieving a GPA over 3.5.

“That’s a big goal of mine for the school year,” Adams said. “For me it’s about mixing football goals and academic goals.”

The U of M Bisons will kick off their regular season schedule when they take on the Saskatchewan Huskies at IG Field in Winnipeg on Aug. 30.
