When it comes to overtime, Brandon Thiessen is money in the bank for the SRSS Sabres men’s hockey team.

For the second game in a row, Thiessen scored the winner in overtime as the Sabres beat the Sturgeon Heights Huskies 4-3 Wednesday in Winnipeg. A few days earlier in Selkirk, Thiessen was also the OT hero as the Sabres beat the Royals 2-1.

Thiessen’s winner against Sturgeon finally ended the see-saw battle in what was one of the biggest victories of the season for the Sabres against one of the league’s top teams. The Huskies are fourth in the WHSHL’s Platinum Division with a record 15-4-2-0 while the Sabres, who have won three in a row, improved to 9-8-2-1.

The Sabres leading scorer, Ethan Plett, scored two goals in the win over the Huskies, including what appeared to be the winning goal with only 1:36 remaining in regulation. But Ryan Ostermann tied it for the Huskies just 28 seconds later, setting the stage for Thiessen’s winner 1:16 into overtime. Tyren Clayton also had a second period marker for the Sabres.

The Sabres go right back at it Thursday afternoon back in Winnipeg as they take on the Westwood Warriors at 4:00 p.m. at Keith Bodley Arena.

Meanwhile, the SRSS women’s team was also in action Wednesday in Steinbach as they fell 3-0 to the Murdoch MacKay Clansmen. Murdoch MacKay scored all three of their goals in a three-minute span of the first period.
