Over the past several weeks, individual teams and sport organizations have been making announcements as to which of their athletes will be representing Manitoba at the Canada Winter Games in February in Red Deer.

Last week it was Manitoba’s ringette team that announced their final roster and included on that team are three players from Eastman.

The local trio includes Belle Paisley of Steinbach, Josee Roy from Ste. Agathe and Oakbank’s Milica Oravec.

And although the official Canada Games roster was only recently announced, in fact these girls have known for several months they would be on the team.

All three previously played in the Eastman Flames AA program prior joining the U20 Team Manitoba squad, but this year, in preparation for the Games, played only on the Team Manitoba squad.

Initially the selection process for the Canada Games team began in September of 2017, when 120 athletes were initially considered as possible candidates for the team. The final Team Manitoba roster was actually determined in May, 2018.

Since that time the girls have been in training and have competed in a myriad of tournaments across the country, where they finished second at tournaments in Nova Scotia and Winnipeg and first in tournaments in Toronto and Montreal.

These tournaments all included the prospective Canada Games teams from various provinces. Manitoba is one of the provinces favoured to win ringette gold at the Canada Games.

The Canada Winter Games begin Feb. 15 in Red Deer.
