The Eastman AA Flames, already having a banner week at the Canadian Ringette Championships in Regina, will face a familiar opponent in the quarter-finals of the U16 division Friday morning. Their opponents will be the Angels from Winnipeg who are playing as Team Manitoba at the nationals.
During the regular season in Manitoba in the ‘AA’ league, the Angels dominated the regular season with a 14-0-2 record while the Flames were 8-7-1. But at provincials, the Flames narrowly lost 6-5 to the Angels in the third and deciding game of the provincials final. That rivalry will now be renewed Friday morning in the quarter-finals of the 16-team national tournament.
The Flames have been stupendous so far this week, finishing with a flashy 6-1 round robin record, second in their pool, while the Angels, the Manitoba reps, were 5-2, and third in the other pool. Eastman completed their round robin schedule this morning with an 11-6 victory over the Regina Stingers. Tied 5-5 at the half, the Flames outscored the Stingers 6-1 in the second half.
Eastman was the highest scoring team of 16 teams in the round robin with 58 goals in seven games. The Flames were also been led by the two leading scorers in the tournament. Josee Huberdeau leads all scorers with 17 goals and 26 points, just a point ahead of teammate Tessa Chernos, who has 15 goals and 25 points.
Meanwhile, the U19 Eastman Flames finished with a 1-4 round robin record at nationals and placed out of the championship round.
