Local athletes set for Western Canada Games

A number of athletes from the southeast will be competing for Team Manitoba at the Western Canada Summer Games, which are being held Aug. 9-18 at Swift Current, Sask.

In all, there will be about 1,700 athletes, coaches and support staff competing in Swift Current, which is a city about the same size as Steinbach.

The Manitoba contingent will include 300 athletes plus another 80 coaches and support staff.

Athletes ages 13-20 will be competing in 19 different sports at the Games.

There are four local athletes competing in track and field (athletics): Caleb Friesen from Grunthal, Trey Friesen from Kleefeld, Kirsten Hurdal from Lorette and Alexandria Buhler from Steinbach.

The baseball team includes Mason Hartung from Steinbach and Lorette’s Carmen Hiebert is part of the basketball team; Lily-Anne Janisch of Ste. Genevieve is competing in rowing; Chase Bueckert from Steinbach is in triathlon; Erika Vermette of Morris is competing in volleyball; and Blumenort’s Talia Bartel is competing in softball.

There are also four local athletes competing in soccer for Team Manitoba: Brielle Marion (Lorette), Elijah Pastoor (Niverville), Noah Thomas (Oakbank) and Samuel Fuss (Steinbach).

The Games get underway on Friday with male and female soccer and then there is a full slate of events in a variety of sports on Saturday.
