The Steinbach Pistons reign as the defending ANAVET Cup champions has now come to an end.

But the good news is, the Cup stays in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League as the MJHL champs defeated the SJHL champs for the second year in a row.

This year the Cup win came courtesy of the Portage Terriers, who defeated the SJHL champion Battleford North Stars in five games, wrapping up the series with a 7-3 victory Thursday night at North Battleford, Saskatchewan.

The North Stars won the opening game of the series in Portage, but then the Terriers came back to win four straight. After gaining a split at home the Terriers won all three games this week at North Battleford.

This caps off a banner season for the Terriers, mirrored much after what the Pistons did last season as the Terriers won the MJHL pennant as the top team in the regular season and ultimately got by the Swan Valley Stampeders in a thrilling seven-game series in the MJHL finals.

Steinbach defeated the Nipawin Hawks to the win the ANAVET Cup one year ago.

The Terriers now advance to the RBC Cup National Junior ‘A’ Championship, being held May 11-19 at Brooks, Alberta.

Portage will be the host city of the 2020 RBC Cup.
