In a clash of 2-0 teams Thursday in Brandon, the Vincent Massey Vikings defeated the SRSS Sabres 20-15 in what could possibly be a preview of a playoff game later this fall.

Vincent Massey, now 3-0, take over sole owership of first place in the Winnipeg High School Football League’s ‘AA’ Kas Vidruk Division.

The Sabres join three others at 2-1 in the tight division standings: Miles Mac, Crocus Plains and Churchill while St. Paul’s sits at 2-0. In two other division games on Thursday, Crocus Plains defeated Elmwood 42-13 and Miles Mac blanked West Kildonan 43-0.

SRSS just couldn’t recover from a 20-3 deficit at the half. Sabres coach Jamie Peters said “the Vikings running backs gashed for them two long scoring plays in the first half and the offence couldn’t get anything going.”

The lone touchdown of the day for the Sabres came on a 55-yard punt return by Shecoy Select. Austin Buhler had another big game along the ground for the Sabres as he lugged the ball 18 times for 138 yards but wasn’t able to get into the end zone.

Peters said, “quarterback Harrison Pankratz and his receivers couldn’t get on the same page and the passing game struggled going 5-for-19 for 69 yards.”

The defence had a strong second half as they shutout the Vikings and had a pair of interceptions by Tyler Wiebe and Tyler Buckert.

The Sabres next see action Friday, Sept. 30 in Winnipeg as they take on the Elmwood Giants at 5:00 p.m.
