Both the SRSS boys’ baseball team and girls’ fastball team camp up just in their quest to win their first provincial high school crown.

Perennial contenders to win it all, including this year, both teams were eliminated in the semi-finals at their respective provincial championships on the weekend.

At Optimist Park in Winnipeg, SRSS came in ranked second behind the Portage Trojans among the 12 teams at the baseball championships.

The Sabres scored convincing victories in their first three games at Optimist Park, crushing Prairie Mountain 12-1 and then Lord Selkirk by an 8-1 score to finish first in their pool.

SRSS kept it going with an 11-1 trouncing of Stonewall in the quarter-finals. But it all came to an abrupt end in the semis as the Sabres were upset 6-4 by the sixth-ranked Garden City Fighting Gophers. The Fighting Gophers went on to defeat the two-time defending champion Portage Trojans 8-7 in the final.

The Sabres’ Keyan Grimard and Austin Friesen were both named provincial all-stars.

Meanwhile at Russell, it was a similar scenario for the SRSS girls’ team at the high school fast pitch championship.

The Sabres, ranked fourth in the field, rolled through the round robin trouncing Major Pratt 10-0 and Mikisew 18-2 to finish first in their pool. SRSS then thrashed the top-ranked Garden Valley Zodiacs 12-3 in the quarter-finals.

But that is when their impressive run came to an end as they lost 3-2 in the semis to Carman/Miami, who were a wildcard qualifier.

Jeanne Sauve went on to win the provincial title, defeating Carman/Miami 11-3 in the final. Meanwhile, the SRSS Sabres won the Third Place game, edging Brandon Vincent Massey 4-3.

Named provincial all-stars from the Sabres were Morgan Friesen and Alyssa Chmiel.
