The Carillon Sultans, embroiled in a nasty mid-season seven-game losing streak, finally got back into the win column Sunday at Morden as they beat the Pembina Valley Orioles in a football like score of 24-12 in the second half of their Manitoba Junior Baseball League doubleheader.
Pembina Valley blanked the Sultans 4-0 in the opening game of the Father’s Day twin bill.
In the explosive second game, the Sultans, trailing 9-6 after five innings, erupted for 18 runs in the final two innings to post the 24-12 victory.
Each of the nine Carillon starters in the game reached base multiple times and each scored at least two runs in the lopsided affair.
In the opener, Pembina Valley jumped into a 3-0 first inning lead and the Sultans weren’t able to answer as the Orioles prevailed 4-0, in a game the Sultans could have used a little of the offence they displayed in the second game.
The Sultans themselves have been on the receiving end of late of some lopsided defeats, so it was nice to see them to finally turn the tables.
On Friday, the Sultans lost 9-1 at Elmwood, and this came after a 16-2 setback at the hands of the St. Boniface Legionaires on Wednesday. Prior to that the Sultans were beaten three straight times by the Altona Bisons.
Carillon`s record now stands at 5-9 for the season, which is fifth in the seven-team loop. The Elmwood Giants lead the MJBL standings with a 10-1 record, followed by the Altona Bisons at 10-4.
The Sultans next see action this Wednesday at Charleswood Park in Winnipeg, where the Sultans are playing some of their home games this season, as they entertain the St. James A`s at 7:00 p.m. Carillon will then host the St. Boniface Legionaires Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Ile des Chenes.
The Carillon Sultans saw their Manitoba Junior Baseball League season come to an end Thursday night in Winnipeg as they lost 7-4 to the St. Boniface Legionaires in the third and deciding game of their MJBL quarter-final series.
With their 24-game Manitoba Junior Baseball League regular season schedule now in the books, the Carillon Junior Sultans are set to their opening round playoff series against the St. Boniface Legionaires.
