Warm weather tends to bring about a lot of enthusiasm from Manitobans, especially from outdoor enthusiasts itching to get on their ATVs for a ride through the trails.

RCMP is reminding riders to keep safety in mind. The law requires all riders to wear an approved helmet.

“You hate to see anyone get killed because they fell off their quad without a helmet,” said Kevin Wynn, RCMP community liaison officer. “A simple step like wearing a helmet can save a life.”

Parents need to ensure their children understand safe riding practices, can legally operate an off-road vehicle and have the maturity to handle the powerful machinery, Wynn added.

In rural areas, it is not uncommon to see four children on a quad built for one person, he pointed out.

“And none of them wearing helmets, that’s very concerning,” said Wynn.

Between June and October 2013, RCMP in Manitoba responded to eight fatal collisions involving ATVs. Contributing factors in these deaths included alcohol use, failure to wear a helmet and speed.
