Tuesday’s provincial byelection is going forward as planned according to Elections Manitoba. The TransCanada pipeline explosion and resulting natural gas outage is not affecting the voting stations in Niverville and Ste Agathe.

While the nursing home is getting emergency gas trucked in for heat, the part of the Niverville Heritage Centre that voting is taking place in has thermal electric heating. The Ste Agathe Community Centre has electric heat and is serving as an emergency shelter, but Elections Manitoba said the privacy of anyone using the shelter is protected as voters are being let in to cast their ballots.

Voting in the byelection to replace retired MLA Mavis Tallieu is open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday. The five candidates are Progressive Conservative Shannon Martin, Liberal Jeremy Barber, the NDP’s Dean Harder, Green Party interim leader Alain Landry, and independent Ray Shaw.
