Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen has been appointed to serve on the Midwest-Canada Energy Committee together with representatives from Saskatchewan, Ontario and elected officials from the Midwest United States.

“Energy issues, whether they relate to hydro or oil, are very important to Manitoba and its future. I look forward to learning more about these issues and both advancing Manitoba’s interests and learning from others on the committee,” Goertzen said in a release.

Goertzen already serves on the Canada-U.S. Relations committee of the Council of State Governments (CSG) and will continue his work on that committee. That committee primarily deals with issues of cross border trade and commerce.

“The world energy market is volatile and that has a great impact on Canada as a whole. For Manitoba, what happens in the energy sector is tremendously important to us and the strength of Manitoba Hydro is closely tied to the future prosperity of our province,” said Goertzen.

Goertzen says he will be meeting with U.S. and Canadian members of the energy committee later this year in Saskatchewan and will be visiting the Boundary Dam power plant near Estevan as part of the meetings.
