A goat farmer and a psychology student have been slotted in as the Manitoba Liberals’ final candidates in southeastern Manitoba ridings.

Bill Paulishyn, 75, is the Liberals’ candidate in La Verendrye. An Anola resident, he and his wife Margaret raise Kiko goats at their farm. Paulishyn, a former school teacher for 35 years, is currently president of the Manitoba Goat Association and once sat as councillor in the RM of Springfield.

He joins incumbent Dennis Smook with the Progressive Conservatives, Echo Asher representing the NDP and the Greens’ Janine Gibson as ballot options.

Dakota Young-Brown, 22, will carry the party’s banner in Steinbach. Young-Brown, who lives in Winnipeg, is a fifth-year student completing his psychology degree at the University of Manitoba, with aspirations to enter law school. He was formerly a member of the university’s men’s swimming team.

Young-Brown will face off against Kelvin Goertzen of the Progressive Conservatives, who claimed the riding with 85 percent support in 2011. The other candidate is the NDP’s Kathleen McCallum.
