A Niverville resident was attacked inside his garage by an assailant with a machete early Tuesday morning.

St Pierre RCMP responded to a call of an injured male at a residence in the southwest area of Niverville at 1:40 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The 43-year-old homeowner heard activity in his detached garage, police say. When he entered the garage, he was confronted by three males, each with their faces covered.

One of the suspects struck the homeowner with a machete and the suspects fled. It is unknown if they were in a vehicle or on foot, police say.

The homeowner sustained non-life threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

This incident has renewed Niverville council’s call for a greater police presence in town.

Mayor Myron Dyck said firstly, council’s thoughts are with the victim and his family.

“Our thoughts are with the family. We—obviously in a small town—know them and we’re upset by what has happened,” said Dyck.

Prior to Tuesday morning’s council meeting, Niverville council discussed the attack and what they could do.

“We met early this morning to discuss this. We’re looking for more information from the RCMP. We’ve reached out to them. We know our residents are gravely concerned and safety is a concern in our community,” said Dyck.

“Council met to discuss further options of what we can do in terms of what we can do as far as the police side [of things.] We’ve been asking for, every time we meet with them, a greater police presence in our community. This will continue even more so as we look for the options we can do as individuals.”

Last November, after a string of vandalism incidents hit town, Niverville council again brought up the call for a greater police presence in town.

“To the residents, we know you’re upset. We emphasize with everyone. It’s our community, so we all live here. We all feel the same. We’ll continue to see what we can do as far as policing. We’ll see what we can do as far as volunteering and we’ll see what we can do about making our residents safer,” said Dyck.
