Some Niverville residents have approached town council with concerns of fast moving traffic along feeder streets in the community. There are a number of streets that connect bays and cul-de-sacs and some of those streets are being singled out.

“When you’re standing there and visually watch the speed of traffic, you feel it might be going a bit fast,” acknowledged councilor Kevin Stott. “And for a child’s safety, it probably is.”

Council has decided to look at how other Manitoba communities are dealing with traffic speed concerns before making a decision on how to address the concerns. The community already has stop signs at nearly every intersection and a few speed bumps near the personal care home.

Although speed bumps may prove effective in slowing down traffic, they create challenges for equipment that is used to keep the streets clean.

“Everyone in town likes neat, clean streets, especially in the winter. The more speed bumps or humps in town, the harder it is on our works and operations department,” Stott pointed out. “We want to sit and talk to the Works and Ops department to see what our policy would be to have such bumps in town.”

Council will have to decide if speed bumps or humps make sense. If that is the route it takes, other decisions will have to be made to ensure the best locations are chosen.

There are concerns that speed bumps could create more problems with snow collecting at the bumps, resulting in vehicles getting stuck.
