Steinbach will host its first organized Pride event this summer in support of the LGBT community.
There will be a march down three blocks of Main Street on Saturday, July 9, spokesperson Michelle McHale confirmed to The Carillon.
The sidewalk march will commence at 11 a.m. at the Steinbach United Church at 541 Main Street and then head to city hall for a rally where community leaders will speak. The procession will then head back to the church.
McHale said the march, organized in part by Pride Winnipeg and a local committee, is in response to requests from members of the Steinbach community for an event promoting equality for everyone regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Issues of acceptance of the LGBT community have arisen in recent months due to formal asks by McHale and a student that the Hanover School Division allow discussion of these matters in class.
Pride Winnipeg has recently ventured beyond the Perimeter to bring events outside Winnipeg, with Thompson launching its first pride festival in 2014. Steinbach will become the third community Pride Winnipeg hosts programming at.
Brandon Pride was formed in 2009 and their first march was held last year.
