A heavily armed police presence swarmed a residence south of St Malo Monday as part of an ongoing criminal investigation involving the RCMP and Winnipeg Police Service.

The horde of activity was centered east of Highway 59 on Lambert Street, about a mile south of the community, with police officers on site all afternoon, including some armed with rifles.

The barricaded area included Benoit Avenue, Gosselin Road and Gauthier Road. Residents were turned away by police when they tried to return home. By late afternoon only Lambert Street remained closed.

Both police departments have not divulged what matter brought them to St Malo.

Some bus routes for St Malo School students were altered Monday afternoon due to the police presence, Red River Valley School Division superintendent Pauline Lafond-Bouchard confirmed.

Erin Waldner, who lives on Lambert Street, watched from her home as her driveway was blocked by police personnel.

She called St Pierre RCMP after noticing the intrusion on her yard. The phone call allayed her worries.

“They said, ‘No, there isn’t a danger to public safety,’” said Waldner.
