It’s almost time to fill the K.R. Barkman Park with men and women from the business community for the annual CEO Sleepout in Steinbach. Over 60 people have already registered to raise funds for the local homeless shelter and spend a full night in the outdoors, learning more about homelessness in the community.

The event will raise awareness while raising funds toward a capital campaign to purchase the local shelter which is currently owned by private citizens who wish to remain anonymous.

Today House is a non-for-profit, integrated community-based program that provides immediate, overnight emergency temporary shelter for individuals who are homeless or street involved. The shelter is governed by a board of directors and volunteers help operate the house while guests are staying for the night.

“We’re not full every night,” said board chair Simone Penner, “That’s a good thing if it means people are not in need of shelter. We do have guests three nights this week.”

Community leaders are invited to participate in the CEO Sleepout on Sept. 18. The event brought in $32,000 last year. The goal for this year is $50,000. More information can be found at www.todayhouse.ca.
