A man who headed to Steinbach provincial court for over yet another impaired driving charge now has jail as his next destination.
Johan Reimer was sentenced on Thursday to a three-year jail term after landing in court for the eighth time on charges of impaired driving and, for a seventh time, driving while disqualified.
“That’s exceptional under any standard,” said Crown attorney Bruce Sychuk, as he explained his rationale for the three year sentence, which was jointly agreed to by Reimer’s defence and was accepted by Judge Ken Champagne.
The 53-year-old has already served time for similar charges.
“You’re an alcoholic. I think you realise that,” said Champagne, “There are other people who are alcoholics but they don’t get behind the wheel. If you’re going to drink, don’t drive.”
Champagne highlighted details from Reimer’s latest incident, noting the accused fell out of the vehicle he had been driving and had to be held up by an RCMP officer at the scene.
“If we see you back, you can count on going to jail for a lot longer,” Champagne told him.
Reimer was also ordered to pay $400 in fines and was handed a lifetime driving ban.
