West Nile Virus case identified

The first human case of West Nile Virus in Manitoba this year has been identified in a male from the Southern Health region.

The man, who is in his 40s, is believed to have been exposed to the virus during the week of July 17. He was hospitalized after experiencing neurological symptoms of the virus.

Historically, the province said in a release this is a high risk period for West Nile Virus activity in Manitoba. Current risk levels for human exposure are described as moderate.

Manitobans are encouraged to take precautions to reduce the risk of mosquito bites and eliminate standing water around homes to prevent mosquito development.
