A former Vassar resident is releasing a novel about the trials and tribulation of one woman who lives in her car to escape a mentally abusive relationship.

Kim Cayer, who now lives in Toronto, is the author of No Fire Escape in Hell.

The novel tells the story of Maddy Magee, a woman who makes a living as a singing-telegram performer. She’s in a mentally abusive relationship with her husband. He agrees to leave the marriage on one condition—which leaves Maddy to live in her car and face the struggles and triumphs that come with it.

Along the way Maddy meets memorable characters like Jody, her daughter’s transgender boyfriend, and Daphne, a charming homeless woman who may have a mental illness. And there’s the tow truck driver who tries to save Maddy’s car/home.

Cayer describes the novel as a comedic look at a tough situation.

Like Maddy, Cayer makes a living as a singing telegram performer, but has always had a passion for writing since she was young.

This is Cayer’s third novel. Her last novel, Lights! Camera! Dissatisfaction!, was released in 2014 and was featured on McNally Robinson Booksellers’ best sellers list.

Cayer said she would like to thank the people from southeastern Manitoba for all the support they’ve given her with her novels and other work.

No Fire Escape in Hell will be launched at McNally Robinson Booksellers on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.

The novel is available for purchase through McNally Robinson Booksellers, Chapters, and amazon.ca.
