The RM of La Broquerie’s fire chief is looking to farmers and firefighters to get him rescued of the island.
No, Alain Nadeau isn’t a castaway on the reality show Survivor.
Nadeau is a participant in STARS Rescue on the Island 2016—a fundraiser that drops community leaders on a remote island and tasks them with raising $50,000 for STARS Manitoba before they can be rescued.
Nadeau, a firefighter for 37 years and a fire chief for 11, said he regularly sees STARS in action on the ground level.
“I’m the first that they’ve asked that’s an actual firefighter and has seen STARS on scene,” said Nadeau. “We use STARS on a fairly regular basis and know the difference that STARS makes.”
“STARS is about the rural areas and the Southeast, so I’m basing my fundraising campaign this year on farmers and firefighters in the area,” said Nadeau.
Nadeau himself is both a firefighter and a farmer. He’s been farming his whole life and owns Renaissance Bison in La Broquerie. Nadeau is also the Eastman mutual aid district fire coordinator, representing 17 fire halls in the Southeast.
Nadeau is challenging his fellow comrades in fire halls across the region to raise and donate $500 to his campaign. He said he’ll also be visiting about 30 livestock operations throughout the area to talk about his campaign.
Nadeau has important reasons to focus on the two groups.
“One of the reasons [my campaign focuses on] farmers and firefighters is they are two of the most dangerous jobs around. Farming has been known to be one of the most dangerous jobs,” said Nadeau. “Also, firefighting [aspect helps] because we know the difference STARS makes for first responders. It’s a great tool to have for us. I want to show that the Southeast really appreciates and values the STARS program.”
