Come next year, residents in Landmark and Linden will have the option of speedier internet thanks to Tom Motyka and Fusion Broadband.

Motyka and his partner Bryan King met with the RM of Tache on July 14 to get the green light to start moving operations ahead to bring their new company to parts of southeastern Manitoba.

After council voted unanimously to allow the business into the area, Tache Mayor Justin Bohemier shared congratulations with the pair and welcomed them to the community.

Coun. George McGregor (Ward 2) shares the excitement with Motyka and the rest of council.

“I think it’s going to be a huge bonus for the town,” McGregor said. “It’ll also help in boosting the resale value of our homes because of the fiber optics.”

Motyka said Fusion will give residents the option for high-quality fiber-to-the-home internet service at competitive rates, giving options to those looking at switching from existing services in the area. He also noted the durability of fiber optics.

“It’s future-proof,” Motyka told The Carillon. “As technology changes, the fiber optic cable in the ground will never need to be replaced unless it’s damaged.”

Motyka has an extensive background in providing services across the province. He began in Gillam, MB where he co-founded CommStream in 2001, an existing company running broadband to the community. In 2017 he moved to Celerity Telecom based in Northwestern Ontario which focuses on fixed wireless internet. After keeping in touch with King for a number of years, they partnered up to start Fusion Broadband.

“We’re focusing on communities that are currently underserved with broadband and the big players overlook because they’re either too small or outside their normal footprint,” Motyka said. Landmark and Linden will be the first communities Fusion will provide the Gigabit-level internet to with other areas already in mind.

McGregor said for too long residents have felt the pain of slow internet service in the area and this opportunity will be a great help.

“It’s been a bone of contention for many many years out here,” he said. “Especially if you’re working from home or you have a lot of children that use the internet for gaming or watching movies.”

Now that they have approval from council, Motyka and King plan to start advertising and selling their service to residents in the coming months with the goal of having their internet up-and-running next summer.
