Soon-to-be interim principal of Mitchell Middle School A.J. Neufeld is a Neufeld from British Columbia, but moving to the east reserve was a something of a homecoming, in a vague sense.

“I don’t have family here, and yet I do if that makes any sense,” Neufeld said, adding he has relatives on his mother’s side in the area.

Hanover School Division announced last Thursday Neufeld got the interim principal job at Mitchell Middle School after working as vice-principal of Stonybrook Middle School in Steinbach since 2017.

Neufeld has previously worked in a physical education specialist role at Clearspring Middle School, and taught at Green Valley School in Grunthal. He’s also taught in Abbotsford, B.C. and Meadow Lake, Sask.

Neufeld said the prairie air was better for his wife’s health, which is one reason the family moved, and that she has family in the area.

“We quickly determined you need a lot of help to raise kids,” Neufeld said.

The interim principal role is to last until the end of the school year in June, Neufeld said. The current principal of Mitchell Middle School, Andrew Mead, was recently hired to be principal of the province’s Remote Learning Support Centre, which was announced as an online learning hub for students.

Neufeld said he enjoys working with middle year’s students.

“It’s awesome because they’re at a formative place in their lives,” Neufeld said. “They’re at the same time goofy and fun-loving, and serious, and living and dying with the big issues of the world and the big issues in their communities.”
