The former Steinbach Family Medical building on Loewen Boulevard in Steinbach doesn’t look much like a doctors’ office anymore. Interior walls have been removed, ceilings are gone and flooring scraped up as new owners Country Meat and Sausage prepare for a new vision.

“Right now we’ve completely gutted the place and we’re looking to do a full reno of it,” operations manager Thomas Jowett said.

The Blumenort based Country Meat and Sausage are planning to move their sausage making process to the new site which will also carry their products, including a deli. Their slaughter capacity will remain in Blumenort.

“We’re going to keep the rest of the facility intact in Blumenort,” Jowett confirmed.

At 18,000 square feet the building has plenty of possibilities.

“We are currently talking with some other businesses about moving in there with us,” he said, adding they’re considering shops like a bakery, ice cream place, cake shop and many more. “There are a few businesses that have approached us and we’re kind of finding out who’s going to be a good fit there.”

Jowett said they’re looking for complementary local businesses to help fill up the space.

The building is still early in the design stage but Jowett said they expect to fill 8,000 to 10,000 square feet of the building’s space, depending on what that footprint would look like.

“We want to really make it so it’s inviting for the customers,” he said. “We just stripped it out so we can get a good clear picture of the empty canvas.”

Because of the work that has to be done, both in design and construction, Jowett said he doesn’t expect an opening to take place before late summer or fall.

“We’ve got a lot of different ideas for the place,” he said. “We want to really bring some life back to it. We want to do it right before anyone’s moved in.”

Location and accessibility proved to be the attraction for the building to Country Meat and Sausage.

“We were really excited about the fact the main walking path through Steinbach goes right through there and it’s surrounded by houses,” he said. “It’s a really convenient location for a lot of people.”

Being adjacent to the walking path also offers more possibilities, such as a patio area on that side of the building.

While there’s much left to do, Jowett said they’re excited about what the future will hold.

“We thought this was a fantastic opportunity,” he said.
