Manitoba’s minister of health will be stepping away from her duties and former minister Kelvin Goertzen will be taking her place in the interim until at least June 1.

The province confirmed Heather Stefanson will be taking a voluntary leave of absence to ‘undergo a necessary medical procedure as recommended by her physician’.

The substitution comes at a critical time when hospitals and intensive care units are overflowing with patients ill or recovering from COVID-19 and over a dozen patients have been transported to hospitals in Ontario to be cared for due to a lack of ICU beds in Manitoba. Deputy Premier Goertzen, who chaired the role from 2016-2018, will be overlooking the province’s health sector until Stefanson’s physician advises she can return to work.
