The Village of St Pierre was the latest recipient of a grant from the provincial government to further their goal of making the community a more sustainable place.

The province handed the village $134,000 to seal manholes as part of a six-phase drainage retrofitting program St Pierre undertook over the last few months.

St Pierre underwent a sewer system assessment and study in 2021 and 2022 respectively as part of a climate resiliency program.

CAO Tina Bubenzer said the latest phase of the project comes from observations the village made regarding the community’s sewer system during the spring melt.

“With the water levels and the high rains in the spring we saw an increase of infiltration in our sewer systems,” she said. “So we need to work on how to divert the water from going into our sewer system and instead going into the ditches and into the creek.”

Phase one, completed last year, saw an underground pipe installed in the parking lot of the St Pierre Museum to divert pooling water within the village to Joubert Creek. Phase two was an update to a manhole on Newbury Street which connects to the drainage pipe while future phases will be carried out in the near future.

The manhole sealing is expected to begin in spring.
