The goaltender who backstopped the Steinbach Pistons to their second-ever Turnbull Trophy is finding success in a new school.

Altona-native Matthew Thiessen was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference goaltender of the week Dec. 6, after backstopping the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs to a split with Colorado College.

Thiessen saved 52 shots over the weekend series, including a 24-save shutout Dec. 3 to help the Bulldogs return to 0.500 on the season.

It was Thiessen’s first collegiate shutout.

The game before, Thiessen was the goalie of record in a 3-0 loss, giving up two goals on 30 shots.

Thiessen transferred to Minnesota Duluth after spending the past four years with the University of Maine.

The former Piston now has a 2.00 goals against average and a 0.925 save percentage this year, good for sixth in the NCAA. In the 2018 NHL draft, Thiessen was selected by the Vancouver Canuks in the seventh round.

During the 2018 MJHL playoffs, Thiessen put up a 10-4 record with a 0.944 save percentage and goals against average of just over 1.5.
