Bus crash sends eight to hospital

A 19-year-old woman and a several youth were taken to hospital after a collision involving a school bus Wednesday afternoon.
St Pierre RCMP and the Hanover Fire Department were called to the intersection of Highway 52 and Highway 59 around 2:15 p.m. after reports a vehicle struck a school bus.
RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Paul Manaigre said in a statement a school bus was heading south on Highway 59 when it attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Highway 52 and was hit by a northbound vehicle.

A statement from Hanover School Division states the bus of students was en route back to Steinbach Regional Secondary School from a field trip when the accident occurred.
Eighteen students, one teacher and the driver were on the bus.
The driver, a 19-year-old female, was transported via STARS with serious injuries. The driver of the school bus and six youth were also taken to hospital as a precaution. The extent of their injuries was not known as of press time.
After the remaining students were triaged by EMS personnel on scene, a recovery bus transported them back to SRSS. Parents and caregivers of those involved were notified, the division’s statement said.
The intersection remained closed most of the afternoon as the investigation continued.
