A new play structure and other improvements were celebrated in Giroux on June 3 as the RM of Ste Anne hosted the grand opening of the Giroux Heritage Park.

Guests were treated to entertainment from escape artist Dean Gunnarson, enjoyed hotdogs and freezies, and had their faces painted.

RM of Ste Anne Ward 1 councillor Sarah Normandeau explained the RM purchased the park from the volunteer group that ran it for many years.

The new play structure, fence, bench and outdoor rink upgrades have improved the facility, but Normandeau said the event helps the park achieve what it’s always done, bringing people together.

“The cool thing about this event is neighbours meeting neighbours,” she said. “Events like this really bring people together.”

Normandeau grew up in Giroux and remembers spending long summer days enjoying the facilities and catching tadpoles in the ditch.

Deputy Reeve Randy Eros said it was important to recognize the families that came together to make this park and were cornerstones to the development of Giroux.

“This park is a tribute to many of the people who contributed to our community over the years and it’s a place where we come together to learn, to reflect and honour our community,” he said at the event. “It’s a special place that showcases the story of the people who have shaped our community.”

“We hope that the park will inspire future generations to continue to celebrate and cherish our wonderful community,” he added.

Special mention was also made of the Giroux fire department and a bench was added with a plaque that said: “Dedicated to the Adams, Hornan, and Plett families in recognition of their dedication, sacrifice and years of service to the Giroux Fire Department RM of Ste Anne.”
