The Carillon newspaper won six awards at the 2023 Canadian Community Newspaper Association’s Awards.
First place awards were received for best sports coverage, best news story and best agricultural section.
The Carillon finished second place as best all round newspaper and third place finishes were awarded for best national editorial and best business writing.
Judges were impressed with the Steinbach based newspaper.
Sports editor Cassidy Dankochik was recognized by the judges who described the sports section as “job well done”.
“The Carillon has the widest variety of sports and features that went beyond typical games coverage and results,” judges commented, adding the photo quality and statistics page added to the result.
They also praised Carillon reporter Nicole Buffie for her work on the best news story of the year. Titled, ‘Fed up with frog jumping’ (Aug. 25, 2022), judges described the story that looked at the practice of trapping frogs for St Pierre Frog Follies and the growing opposition as “wonderful”.
Best Agriculture edition in Canada was also received for the Aug. 11, 2002 edition of Ag Now, an agricultural supplement to The Carillon.
Judges praised Wes Keating for his work in writing and photographing the content.
“The Carillon’s agricultural edition wasn’t the biggest entry in the category, but it earned top prize in the old-fashioned way – with solid reporting and original photography of the people in its stories,” judges commented. “Stories covered a lot of bases, including challenges farmers overcame and the personal rewards they enjoy from their line of work.”
Judges also described The Carillon as “excellent” as they awarded second prize for best all round newspaper.
“The total package editorially with great sections (an increasing rarity in community newspapering) and the best photography in the category in quantity and quality, especially in thoughtful composition,” the comments stated.
Third place awards included the national editorial category, for a piece headlined ‘Abortion frequency about more than just legality’ (May 5, 2022) by Greg Vandermeulen, and best business writing for a story headline ‘Trucking industry grapples with looming vaccine mandate’ (Jan. 13, 2022), by Nicole Buffie.
