Denton Mateychuk and Own Pickering have shared a lot of moments throughout their hockey careers. The two Eastman defensemen played on a championship U15 team together and were drafted in the first round of the NHL entry draft in 2022.

The cousins now share another honour — Western Hockey League (WHL) divisional first team all-stars.

Mateychuk and Pickering were named to their respective division’s all-star teams on March 26.

St Adolphe’s Pickering was excellent for the Swift Current Broncos this season, leading his team in points by a defenseman.

The 6’4 player was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins 21st overall in 2022, and has 133 points in over 200 career games in the WHL.

Dominion City’s Mateychuk was even better in Moose Jaw, setting a new franchise record for points by a defenseman. His 75-point campaign in 2023/2024 bumped his career totals to 215.

Mateychuck was selected by Columbus in the NHL draft.

Both the Warriors and Broncos have begun their playoff series. Second-seeded Swift Current, which also boasts Steinbach’s Luke Mistelbacher, are set to do battle with the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Despite the difference in the standings, Lethbridge led the season series with four victories and an overtime loss in eight regular season games.

Manitoba fans will get the chance to see Mateychuk in action if they make the trip out west, with the third-seeded Warriors taking on the sixth-place Brandon Wheat Kings in the first round.
