Improved cell coverage is coming to another Southeast community.
RM of Tache council approved a tower for Ste Genevieve that will eliminate dead zones and give more reliable coverage for cell phone users with Rogers.
Ward 6 Councillor Natashia Lapeire said the community was lagging behind most of the province in terms of having reliable connection.
“From the RM’s perspective, we’re very excited to finally have this type of service as an option coming to the residents in the Ward 6 area,” Lapeire said in a phone call.
The tower will give the entire community service and some of the surrounding area. Lapeire said it won’t extend much further though, and the ends of her ward will not be affected.
“Right now, in Ste Genevieve there’s a lot of dead zone. People don’t receive calls properly in the Ste Genevieve area,” said Lapeire. “This tower will be tall enough for a proper wireless signal for any Rogers carriers with the signal there.”
According to the councillor, there will remain a small dead zone directly underneath the tower, although the closest residents don’t fall under this circle. In the June 11 council meeting, it was described as 20-30 meters in all directions from the tower.
Rogers is the first company to bring better service to the township, with no plans being announced from their competitors.
Lapeire said this won’t be it for Ste Genevieve, as she wants more growth and coverage.
“As it develops further down the road, we’ll need to address this as we move forward and as the community develops with more people, but this is a great first step.”
