Steinbach Arts Council concludes successful year with murder

The Steinbach Arts Council’s concert series has come to an end after a successful year and capping off the run will be a comedy about murder.
“(Murder for Two) is billed as a musical whodunit. A bit of a murder mystery along with some piano shenanigans. It should be a real hoot. I saw on the playwrights website it was, ‘We put the laughter in slaughter,’ which is hilarious to me.” laughed Tara Schellenberg, performing arts coordinator for SAC.
Murder for Two stars Duncan Cox as Marcus and Melanie Whyte as the suspects. The two actors play a dozen roles in the musical comedy.

“This tour has been a critical part of Royal MTC for decades,” said artistic director Kelly Thornton. “It’s our way of connecting with communities, connecting with people beyond the perimeter and sharing stories, inspiring audiences young and old and just bringing people together.”
This is the last entertainment act in the concert series for SAC, which Schellenberg said was the arts organization’s most successful year since the pandemic.
“This was our 45th anniversary concert series and we have presented – I guess not all of them have been in the concert series – but including Fiddler On The Roof performances, we’ve sold out nine of our 10 concerts this year. Obviously, the community is responding really well to what we’re presenting and that’s really exciting for us.”
Schellenberg believes the success is also due to people feeling more comfortable with being in large crowds again, the success of the community musical, and communicating with audiences on what they would like to see on the stage.
Although Murder for Two is sold out, Schellenberg said to make sure you have a ticket for the next concert series she recommends buying a season pass.
“We’re going to be announcing our next concert series in late spring. The best way to make sure you don’t miss a concert that you want to see is to get on our season ticket list and people can contact me anytime to get on the season ticket list for next year.”

Up next in entertainment at SAC is the Manitoba Theatre for Young People’s production of Blue Beads and Blueberries on April 11. It’s a Métis re-imagining of an old English folk tale. On April 13, Flipside Opera performs with limited seating of 45. Ending the season will be concerts at K.R. Barkman Park in the summer.
