Springfield Theatre Company presents The Little Mermaid Jr.

A cast of 22 students led by director Betty Asseiro will take to the stage this week to present The Little Mermaid Jr.

The 60-minute musical, designed for young performers, is based on the 2008 Broadway production and the 1989 animated film.

It is the 15th production brought to Springfield by the theatre company.

Asseiro said they’re excited for people to come out and take it all in.

“The kids and team at Springfield Theatre Company have been hard at work creating a high-energy, visually striking and heartwarming production for your whole family to enjoy,” she said in a press release. “The arts are such a powerful community building resource, and we are proud to be building a thriving company that showcases local talent and top-notch youth theatre.”

This Disney title contains all the songs from the Academy Awards winning animated feature film as well as three new songs from the Broadway show.

It takes place in a magical kingdom beneath the sea where a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first, she’ll have to defy her father, the king of the sea, escape the clutches of an evil sea witch and convince a prince that she’s the girl with the perfect voice.

A single performance will take place on Thursday and Friday with two shows taking place on Saturday at Oakbank United Church.
